The Case for the Formal Living Room - Do you have a space in your home that's never quite suited what you use it for? Maybe it's meant to be a formal living room!

The Case for the Formal Living Room

Formal living rooms are becoming less popular as people switch to using the room as a multi-purpose space. However, the charm of the formal living room still remains. Formal living spaces are centered around encouraging conversation, rather than having the focus be on a television. Reception rooms, sitting rooms, and great rooms all fall into the formal category – and they’re a good place to host visitors when you don’t want them to see how messy your family room is.

If you like to entertain guests in your home, and want a space away from family or eating areas, a formal living room might be right for you. It can be a small nook to the side of your front entrance, the biggest room in your home, or a simple room with space for a sofa and chair. They can be styled any way that you want – the focus is on creating a space that encourages connecting to another person. Otherwise, it’s a perfect spot for curling up with a book. No distracting noises from televisions or kitchens!
